EULEAD Provides OKM Georadar for Mass Grave Investigation in Libya

March 31, 2022

In August 2021, a certification ceremony was held for the CID Mass Graves Responders team trained under EULEAD.

Through the EULEAD project, the European Union is supporting the CID Criminal Investigation team in its work on the Tarhouna Mass Graves.

EULEAD provided the CID with the Ground Penetrating Radar OKM Gepard GPR 3D to enhance the capacities of the search teams to locate mass graves in Tarhouna. Moreover, EULEAD provided training in forensics and on the GPR. After five weeks of theoretical and practical training, the team now is equipped with the best skills of using advanced radar technologies to explore previously unidentified subsurface structures in the homeland.

Thanks to EULEAD’s support, the CID teams are now able to efficiently search areas, to identify mass grave locations, conduct forensics tasks on recovered bodies, and release lands that have been cleared thanks to the GPR scans.

In March 2022, an intensive training program on methods of exploring and identifying mass graves with advanced technical equipment was implemented at the Criminal Investigation Department.

The training program for members of the unit from the southern branches of Sabha and Benghazi improved competencies in various disciplines and technical skills.

The program concluded with a ceremony in which Dean Mahmoud Dou Al-Hawat, Head of the Department / Assessor, and Dean Khaled Benour, Head of the Office of Al-Dahine Affairs, handed over the participants' certificates.

In addition, mass grave detectors like the OKM Gepard GPR 3D were provided to the participants. The training program enables the teams to use the measuring instruments methodically and evaluate the measurement data successfully.
