A Moche Figure After Centuries: A Find in Northern Peru's Desert

Some finds don't begin with a beep. They begin with a story. In this case, a tip from an older man who knew of an abandoned, hard-to-reach archaeological site deep in the desert.

A Long Journey for a Vague Lead

The trip led across Peru, from the highlands to the country's arid northern coastal desert — a region well known for its pre-Columbian history. Once on site, the real work began: searching several zones of the terrain systematically, without a single promising signal.

Three Hours, No Target in Sight

For nearly three hours, the search turned up nothing. Anyone who has spent real time in the field knows this moment — the temptation to call it quits before the actual find is even within reach. It's exactly here that persistence and proper site reconnaissance separate a serious search from a short one.

The Turning Point

The breakthrough came in a central area of the site: a clear, clean signal — strong enough to warrant digging. The first centimeters brought up small iron fragments, the kind found at many historical sites. It wasn't until greater depth, around 80 cm, that things got interesting: heavily deteriorated textile remains, suggesting an original burial or deposit.

The scan that led to this discovery, performed with the OKM eXp 4500, predecessor to the OKM eXp 5500 Professional.

A Figure Made of Pure Copper

Hidden within the textile remains was the actual object: a small figure, crafted entirely from fine copper sheets and attributed to the Moche culture — one of the most significant pre-Columbian cultures on Peru's northern coast, known for its craftsmanship in metalwork and ceramics. What stood out most was the weight: remarkably light for its size, a result of the thin, carefully worked copper layers it's made of.

We had never seen anything like it. To us, it's a sacred relic.

The Detector Behind the Find

The scan was carried out with the OKM eXp 4500, the predecessor to our current OKM eXp 5500 Professional. Both belong to our eXp series of 3D ground scanners: they visualize the strength of the magnetic anomaly in the ground — experienced users read position, depth, and size from that data, exactly as it delivered the decisive clue in this case. The eXp 5500 Professional carries this working principle forward and is available to users today as the current model.
